With shelter full, Minneapolis drops adoption fees for dogs and cats

City residents applying to adopt dogs and cats will pay no fee, only the cost of licensing. Non-residents will see dog adoption fees drop from $250 to $100.

MINNEAPOLIS — If you've ever thought about adding a four-footed friend to your family, now might be a good time.

The city of Minneapolis announced that fees to adopt dogs and cats from the city shelter have been reduced and eligible residents won't pay any fees at all, only the cost of a license. Adoption fees for non-residents have been reduced from $250 to $100 for dogs, and from $100 to $25 for cats.

The reason is simple: Minneapolis Animal Care and Control (MACC) supervisor Danielle Joerger says the facility is currently full and at capacity, and other animals need help.

“We need adoptions to happen so we can help other animals that need us right now,” Joerger said in a released statement. “With being so full and the adoption fee reduction, we are hoping people will come find their new pets.”

Thursday was a GREAT day at MACC, with 19 animals heading out to their forever homes. Still, there are critters looking for new owners to love them, and anyone wishing to adopt can visit the shelter - located at 212 17th Ave. N. - from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday. Due to the current cold snap, staffers won't make potential adoptees wait in line outside but will take names and phone numbers to text them as they wait in a warm vehicle.

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control partners with the community to ensure the health and safety of pets and people by promoting and supporting proper care of animals. The staff includes two veterinarians, three vet techs, four care technicians and a dozen animal control officers who rescue animals, enforce public health and safety laws and investigate animal crimes.
