Police: Officers shoot armed suspect outside Woodbury Target

Officials said police and SWAT were called to an active scene near 7200 Valley Creek Plaza Monday.

WOODBURY, Minn. — Woodbury officials said a man was hospitalized after what police are calling a "use-of-force" incident at a north metro Target Store Monday morning.

Police asked the public to steer clear of the Target store on the west side of Woodbury as officers responded to an active scene in the area.

Around 10:30 Monday, officers were alerted to a vehicle with stolen license plates in a parking lot off of Valley Creek Road in Woodbury, officials said. The vehicle was unoccupied when officers arrived.

As officers investigated, they said a male suspect returned and started to fight with law enforcement as they attempted to arrest him.

Officers disengaged when they saw the man had a gun, police said.

The suspect barricaded himself in the vehicle and officers called for the SWAT team.

After attempting to negotiate with the man, officers deployed less lethal options "for an extended period of time," police said. Officials said the suspect would not comply with officers.

The suspect later left the vehicle, brandished a handgun and pointed it in the direction of officers, police said.

At that point, officers fired on the man.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is handling the body camera and dash cam video from this incident.

The suspect, a man police think is in his 50s, was taken to Regions Hospital with gunshot injuries and is being treated. There was no update on his condition Monday afternoon.

One Woodbury officer and a Washington County deputy are on standard administrative leave.

A spokesperson for Target said in a statement that all guests and team members were safe after Monday's incident. The store is closed at this time as authorities investigate.

Minnesota Police and Peace Officer Association General Counsel Imran Ali said in a written statement:

“As a former Washington County Prosecutor, this hit too close to home. While no officer was shot, this could have ended much differently. All over Minnesota, we continue to see a disturbing trend of violence directed at law enforcement. Right now, our women and men need more than thoughts and prayers. It is crucial for leaders to condemn violence against law enforcement and stand in solidarity with officers who put their lives on the line to protect their communities.”
