Summer swimming safety tips from the YMCA

If your child isn't a strong swimmer, you can apply for free lessons from the Y!

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Fourth of July fun usually involves taking a dip in a pool or lake, but that can also be a dangerous time for kids who aren't the strongest swimmers.

KARE 11's Kiya Edwards stopped by the YMCA in St. Paul to learn some tips for parents to keep children safe while swimming this summer.

Swimming safety tips:

  • Never swim alone. Having a buddy means an extra set of eyes... and another person to call for help in an emergency.
  • Parents - put the phones down. You should actively watch your kids as they swim.
  • Young kids or non-swimmers should be no further than an arm's length away from you.
  • Wear a life jacket!

If your child isn't comfortable with swimming just yet, good news. The YMCA offers a limited number of free swim lessons! Click here to learn more about those lessons and apply.
