A driver was killed when his vehicle veered off the road on I-35W, struck a MnDOT truck and then careened into a concrete sound wall Wednesday night.

MINNEAPOLIS — A Richfield man is dead after slowing traffic set off a chain of events that ended with his vehicle striking a concrete sound wall off I-35W in Minneapolis Wednesday evening.

The State Patrol website says the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. on southbound I-35W in Minneapolis near the junction with 50th Street. MnDOT trucks were on the right shoulder with emergency lights illuminated as crews did debris cleanup. Road conditions were described as wet.

Investigators say traffic was slow and merging into the left when a 25-year-old Richfield man driving a Nissan Versa attempted to slow, then apparently overcorrected to avoid hitting vehicles in front of him. The patrol says the driver then veered back across traffic, struck a MnDOT truck, and then crashed into a concrete wall.

Two people, a 40-year-old woman from Eagan and a 23-year-old man from St. Croix Falls, WI were inside the MnDOT truck. The website has no information on whether they were injured.

The State Patrol says the driver who died in the crash will be identified Thursday.
