Fiery wrong-way crash closes busy ramp overnight in New Brighton

MnDOT cameras show the wrong-way driver headed onto the ramp, crashing into the other unsuspecting motorists and one vehicle bursting into a fireball.

NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. — A busy highway ramp is open for the Thursday morning drive, just hours after a fiery wrong-way wreck in Mounds View.

MnDOT cameras captured the crash, which happened about 1:30 a.m. on a ramp connecting I-35W to County Highway 10. The wrong-way driver is seen driving onto the ramp and colliding with the unsuspecting motorist. One of the vehicles then burst into fire. A law enforcement vehicle arrives on scene just 15 seconds later.

New Brighton police say officers spotted two vehicles traveling south on I-35W near County Road H speeding, with the drivers behaving aggressively and trying to cut each other off. Squads attempted to stop one of the drivers, but that person sped off. Concerned about continued aggressive behavior and the dangers it presented to other motorists, New Brighton police say officers terminated the pursuit.

Moments later, squads were dispatched to a crash involving a wrong-way vehicle at I-35W and Highway 10, and they learned the driver who caused the crash was the same one previously being pursued.

Both drivers involved in the crash were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with what police are calling non-life-threatening injuries. A run of the plates on the wrong-way vehicle showed it was recently stolen.

The area reopened to traffic a few hours later.
