Weekend road work: US 169 to close in north metro, Highway 65 lane closures

Construction projects are revving up, and motorist are advised to check routes before hitting the road.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — If life takes you on US 169 on a regular basis, find a new route for the upcoming weekend.

A significant closure in both directions is just one stumbling block for motorists this weekend as road construction season ramps up.

Crews will close heavily used Highway 169 in both directions between Interstate 394 in Golden Valley and Interstate 94 in Maple Grove, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). The closure starts at 10 p.m. Friday and will last until 5 a.m. Monday.

Recommended detours include I-394, I-494 and I-94.

According to MnDOT's website, the construction is in concert with rebuilding the 63rd Avenue bridge over Highway 169. The bridge closed April 15 and will not reopen until October.

A bit further north and east, Highway 65 will also be under construction south of Highway 10 in Blaine. Crews will reduce traffic on Central Ave. to a single lane in each direction and shut down the ramp from eastbound Highway 10 to northbound Highway 65.  The ramp from westbound County Road 10 to southbound Highway 65 also will close and motorists will be advised to find an alternate route.

The closures begin Friday at 10 p.m. and end at 5 a.m. Monday in time for the morning commute.

MnDOT says the weekend's closures are to replace culverts under Highway 65, part of a larger project to repair, resurface and replace bridges on one of the north metro's main arteries.
