Anoka-Hennepin cancels school as Minneapolis, St. Paul schools shift to e-learning ahead of snowstorm

All three school districts announced their plans Tuesday afternoon just ahead of the snowfall, which could produce up to 5 inches by Wednesday morning.

MINNEAPOLIS — Schools in Minneapolis and St. Paul will be shifting to e-learning this week, while the Hennepin-Anoka district is canceling school Wednesday and Thursday in anticipation of the snowstorm forecasted to hit the state in the next three days.

All three school districts announced their plans Tuesday afternoon just ahead of the snowfall, which could produce up to 5 inches by Wednesday morning.

Officials with Anoka-Hennepin School District said classes are expected to resume Friday "unless the district provides an additional notice," according to the district's website.

Minneapolis Public Schools will go to e-learning for the remainder of the week, and all school programs — including Tuesday's school board meetings, early childhood programs and athletics — are canceled.

"Making the decision to keep students home is never an easy one, and we support families’ decisions to do what is best for their children," MSP posted in a tweet. "If your child will be absent on any of the three e-learning days this week, follow your school’s normal attendance procedures."

Here's a full list of the programs the district in canceling this week:

  • Minneapolis Kids
  • MPS Community Education classes
  • Adult education classes
  • Early childhood programs
  • Athletics
  • all other activities and events
  • School board meetings scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21 —  will be rescheduled

Saint Paul Public Schools will be shifting to e-learning on Wednesday and Thursday, with Friday being a snow day. According to a press release, Discovery Club childcare and Community Education classes will be canceled, as well as all athletics and after-school activities through Thursday. Officials say Friday's slate of varsity games will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

On Tuesday, Gov. Tim Walz said he issued emergency executive orders to the National Guard, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota State Patrol after a request from Maj. General Shawn Manke to start preparing for the storm.
