5 teens arrested after Minneapolis carjacking, but police say overall numbers are down

Carjackings have dipped in both Minneapolis and Saint Paul, but haven't lowered to pre-pandemic levels.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Minneapolis Police and Ramsey County deputies arrested five teenagers Tuesday after a carjacking that ended on a busy interstate.

Police tracked the vehicle to the area of Interstate 94 and Dale Street in St. Paul before officers were able to trap the car on an overpass. Several teenagers ran as officers approached the vehicle.

Officials say all five teens were located and arrested.

Police records indicate this incident was the 16th carjacking in Minneapolis this year. Law enforcements says that number is significantly lower than during the same time period last year, when officers saw 29 carjackings in January of 2023.

Both Minneapolis and St. Paul police say they are seeing a downward trend when it comes to carjackings in the Twin Cities.

Here are the total numbers from Minneapolis over the last five years:

Here are the numbers from St. Paul:

  • 2023 – 42
  • 2022 – 53
  • 2021 – 103
  • 2020 – 73

Before 2020, the St. Paul Police Department didn’t even track carjackings as a specific category of crime. Carjackings were instead considered “aggravated robberies.”
