ST PAUL, Minn. — A man has been charged after allegedly attempting to run over a St. Paul police officer in a stolen car.
Nineteen-year-old Salvador Torres Garza has been charged with first-degree assault using deadly force against an officer.
The criminal complaint states the following:
Two police officers spotted a Dodge Journey around 2 a.m. Tuesday, which matched the description of a vehicle that had been stolen recently from an automobile business. One of the officers instructed Garza to get out of the car but Garza sped off and struck an officer. The officer's partner fired shots into the vehicle.The officer landed on the hood and fell off. He was not seriously injured.
Police had been searching for Garza since he failed to appear to court in relation to multiple auto thefts. Since his failed appearance, several auto-related businesses have been burglarized and vehicles have been stolen form those businesses.
A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Police later located the stolen vehicle abandoned. There was no blood inside the vehicle, indicating that Garza had not been shot.
