A two-story barn fire in Barron County, WI claimed the lives of nearly 150 goats and other animals Wednesday.

RICE LAKE, Wisconsin — Investigators are trying to determine the cause of a barn fire in western Wisconsin Wednesday that claimed the lives of 150 goats and several other animals.

Crews from the Rice Lake Fire Department were dispatched just before 4 a.m. to reports of a fire at 2776 23rd St. in the Town of Oak Grove. On arrival, they encountered a two-story barn engulfed in flames with the roof collapsed.

Along with the herd of nearly 150 goats, the fire killed a cow, a horse and several chickens. Pictures from the scene show tanker trucks and portable water tanks, suggesting the property is not on a municipal water system.

Crews trucked in water and pumped from portable water tanks but were unable to save the two-story barn or any of the animals inside.

At this point, a cause for the barn fire has not been determined. WEAU TV reports that damages are estimated at $225,000, and the barn is a total loss.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.
