Check out the new designs proposed for the Minnesota state flag, seal

The State Emblems Redesign Commission will whittle down designs for the flag and seal before choosing one design for each to serve as their respective foundations.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Editor's note: The video above first aired on KARE 11 in June of 2023.

A call to replace Minnesota's much-debated state flag and seal yielded thousands of submissions, the likes of which are now displayed for all to see, thanks to the folks at the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS).

Officials with MNHS said more than 2,600 designs were submitted for consideration. The State Emblems Redesign Commission, which was created during this year's legislative session, will whittle down selections for both the flag and seal, before selecting one design for each to serve as their respective foundations. The commission's deadline is Jan. 1, 2024.

Unless rejected by lawmakers next session, the new emblems will automatically become official on Minnesota Statehood Day on May 11.

The MNHS opened its month-long submission period in October, inviting Minnesotans over the age of 18 to submit their designs. The initiative comes after years of community scrutiny over the flag and seal, which currently depicts a Native American riding off into the sunset while a white settler plows his field with his rifle leaning on a nearby stump.

To many, the imagery is offensive, as it illustrates a Native American being driven off the land.
