Investigation into possible tampering violation with Kirk Cousins won't conclude before draft

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that the Falcons could see a significant penalty, which could include additional draft picks for the Vikings.

MINNEAPOLIS — The NFL's investigation of the Atlanta Falcons' possible violation of tampering policies before signing quarterback Kirk Cousins won't conclude before this week's NFL draft.

The Falcons signed the former Minnesota Vikings quarterback to a four-year, $180 million contract in free agency, but during his introductory press conference, the four-time Pro Bowler said he was in contact with Atlanta's medical staff, which would be illegal.

"There's great people here. And it's not just the football team," Cousins said back in March. "I mean, I'm looking at the support staff. Meeting — calling, yesterday, calling our head athletic trainer, talking to our head of PR I'm thinking, we got good people here. And that's exciting to be a part of."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday that the Falcons could see a significant penalty, which could include additional draft picks for the Vikings. That punishment, however, won't be announced until after this weekend's draft.

Minnesota currently holds two first-round picks, which could be used as ammunition to shoot up into the top 10 to select one of the top quarterback prospects. With Cousins gone, Minnesota added Sam Darnold this offseason to perhaps fill the void. Darnold, a former No. 3 overall pick by the New York Jets, has spent six seasons in the NFL, most recently as a backup in San Francisco.
