Crash injures motorcyclist, pickup driver jailed after leaving scene in Pine County

The sheriff says the cyclist, identified as James Sobczak of Pine County, was airlifted to Regions Hospital with injuries.

PINE CITY, Minn. — A motorcyclist is hospitalized and the driver he collided with is jailed and facing charges following a crash in Pine County Tuesday.

The Pine County Sheriff's Office says squads were dispatched to the intersection of 560th St. and Forest Blvd. just after 5 p.m. on reports of a crash between a pickup and a motorcycle. When deputies arrived, they spoke with witnesses who said the driver of the truck left the scene, leaving the motorcycle rider badly injured.

That motorcyclist, identified by sheriff's officials as James Sobczak of Pine City, was airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for treatment. Sheriff Jeff Nelson says Sobczak's injuries are serious, but not believed to be life-threatening.

A description of the pickup led investigators to identify the driver. On their way to his residence, deputies were informed that the 40-year-old Brook Park man was on his way to the sheriff's office to turn himself in. He was arrested and booked into jail pending formal charges in the incident.

The Minnesota State Patrol is credited with assisting on the crash scene.
