3M layoffs will include 1,100 employees at corporate headquarters

The job cuts, part of 3M's global layoff plan, are set to begin on June 30, 2023.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Editor's note: The video above first aired on KARE 11 on April 25, 2023.

One week after announcing global job cuts, St. Paul-based 3M said 1,100 of those layoffs will apply to jobs at its corporate headquarters.

In a letter to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development's (DEED) WARN Rapid Response Coordinator, 3M said the permanent layoffs will impact the "Maplewood Site," located at 3M Corporate Headquarters in St. Paul.

Last month, 3M announced more than 6,000 jobs would be cut from its global workforce as part of a structural reorganization plan, including 600 jobs in Minnesota. The additional 500 job cuts apply to remote employees who work for headquarters but are not based in Minnesota.

Layoffs are scheduled to begin on Friday, June 30, and 3M said the facility will not close as part of the jobs cuts.

According to 3M and DEED, none of the positions impacted by the layoffs are represented by a union and none of the employees have bumping rights – which would allow senior-level employees included in layoffs to move into positions currently occupied by lower-level staff.

The manufacturing company said the layoffs are intended to make the company "stronger, leaner and more focused."

The staff reductions are expected to save the company an estimated $700-900 million, pre-tax.

3M said it will make the layoff schedule, positions affected and number of affected employees in each job classification available at a later date.
