Matt Lombardi departs as Maple Grove football coach

The Crimson won the Class 6A state title in 2022 under Lombardi's leadership.

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — Big news in Minnesota high school football: KARE 11 has learned Matt Lombardi is leaving his head coaching position at Maple Grove after 13 years.

Under Lombardi's leadership, the Crimson won the Class 6A state title in 2022. Lombardi told our Randy Shaver today that it was a mutual decision between himself and the district.

Lombardi told Randy he met with his players to make the announcement on Monday morning, adding it was very emotional for both sides.

Lombardi may be leaving Maple Grove but not prep football; Matt will be announced as the new defensive coordinator at Minnetonka High School on Tuesday.
