WeatherMinds: Why it's pretty rare to see triple-digit temps in August

With a chance for triple-digit temperatures on the way, KARE 11 meteorologist Ben Dery explains why it's actually been rare for temperatures to reach 100 in August.

MINNEAPOLIS — The month of August is still a very hot month, but it's difficult - though not impossible - to reach triple-digits this time of the year.

Since 1873, Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport has hit 100 degrees in the month of August just seven times.

MSP reached 100 degrees 10 times in the month of June and a whopping 47 times in July.

Why so many days in July and so few in August?

A big part of it has to do with seasonal lag where the hottest temperatures of the year tend to occur a month or so after the Summer Solstice in June.

Another reason is the more humid the air is the more energy it takes to heat it up.

Believe it or not, corn is a big contributor to our humidity thanks to evapotranspiration, or the release of water vapor through plant leaves.

And these days corn is at its peak height.

The next couple of days will give us our best shot at reaching 100 degrees in the month of August since 1988. Stay cool!
