Metro Transit bus crash leaves 1 dead, 6 rushed to hospital

Officials reported that a pickup truck struck the bus around 10:30 p.m. while it was traveling on Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS — One person was killed and six others were rushed to the hospital after a pickup struck a Metro Transit bus in Minneapolis on Sunday night.

A Metro Transit spokesperson says the crash happened around 10:35 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Chicago Avenue and 25th Street East. The bus was headed northbound on Chicago when the truck hit it.

"What we had here was a D-Line bus. These are buses that are up and down Chicago Avenue every 15 minutes most of the day and into the evening," said Drew Kerr, a spokesperson for Metro Transit. "Probably our most popular bus route. So it's not surprising that there were people on board."

Police believe the truck did not stop at a stop sign before attempting to cross the intersection.

One person inside the pickup was confirmed dead at the scene, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner will identify them. Metro Transit said the other victims, who were passengers on the bus, were taken to HCMC for non-life-threatening injuries.

Chicago Avenue reopened Monday morning after closing between 24th and 26th streets for hours while the crash was reconstructed by the Minnesota State Patrol and the scene cleaned up.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is available.
